On the Campaign Trail: On the Hunt

Saturday, October 31 was opening day of pheasant hunting season in Iowa and as is tradition, Rep. Steve King hosted the annual Col. Bud Day Pheasant Hunt. Col. Bud Day was a Medal of Honor winner and political activist before his death in 2013 and each year this hunt attracts Republican supporters who hunt with King and occasionally presidential hopefuls.

On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1, I covered these hunts for Reuters, photographing Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and Sen. Ted Cruz.

I was the only member of the media at every hunt and I learned a couple of things. First, Rick Santorum was the best shot of the group. Second, Sen. Cruz draws the media. It's much harder to make images without the 20+ media in the background. Finally, Mike Huckabee was the only candidate not willing to fire over my head. He told me on the hunt and later that day to make sure to tell my mother that "I didn't want to kill you today." Despite how that sounds, everyone practiced great gun safety.

Reuters was phenomenal in putting together an edit from the 80 or so images I filed that day, which you can check out here: Republicans go Hunting. Or you can check out my edit below.
